The White House put aside budget battles and other worries for a little while Monday, putting children front and center for the annual Easter Egg Roll.
An estimated 30,000 guests – including lots of kids – were expected for the 135th Easter Egg Roll on the South Lawn of the White House. Some kids needed a little encouragement. The theme of this year’s egg roll was “Be Healthy, Be Active, Be You!” – first lady Michelle Obama giving the children some practical advice.”We want you to run around. We want you to go over and see the White House garden. We want you to learn about making healthy, tasty food,” she said.
The first couple then went down to the lawn with the Easter Bunny to help with the festivities.Officials say about 14,500 eggs were dyed for the egg roll and hunt. Another 4,500 eggs were available for children to decorate. There had been fears the nation’s budget woes would force the White House to cancel the annual event. Organizers refused to say how much the Easter Egg Roll cost, saying sales of commemorative eggs and private donations helped cover some of the expenses. – VOA
