By-election: Govt withdraws uplift schemes for Shangla

PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has withdrawn its decision to spend Rs30 million uplift funds in Shangla district after the provincial Election Commission termed the announcement in this regard violation of election rules on the occasion of by-election on PK-87 Shangla-1.The government recently announced Rs30 million projects in Shangla where the commission had already announced by-election and banned transfers and postings of government employees and initiation of new developmental schemes till the election.On January 10, the chief election commissioner of Pakistan had issued notice to the chief secretary, secretary finance and district coordination officer (DCO), Shangla, about the violations of elections rules.The election commission, meanwhile, has arranged training programme for the election staff at Government Centennial Model School, Alpuri, on Jan 20. Returning Officer Pir Maqbool Ahmed will impart the training.

A statement issued here on Tuesday said that 87 male presiding officers, 15 female presiding officers, 126 male assistant presiding officers, 97 female presiding officers, 126 male polling officers and 97 female polling officers would perform the election duties.The provincial election commissioner has directed the election staff to ensure their presence in the training programme and play their role in holding free, fair and impartial polls in Shangla. TANK BY-POLLS:The election commission has announced that by-election on PK-69, Tank, will be held on Feb 28 and candidates can file nomination papers till Jan 20.It said that scrutiny of nomination papers will be held from Jan 24 to 28; appeals against rejection of the papers can be submitted on Jan 31; decisions on the appeals will be made on Feb 7; and candidates could withdraw their papers on Feb 8.It said that the final list of candidates will be displayed Feb 9 – Dawan
