HYDERABAD: Four prisoners were killed and 18 others wounded as police launched a search operation in Central Jail Hyderabad on Tuesday. The figures were given by police spokesman while briefing media at the main entrance of the jail. However, he did not mention the names of the prisoners killed or injured in the operation.According to him, 7 policemen were also injured in the operation, in which four of them sustained bullet wounds.“Sub-Inspector Ibrahim Pitafi, ASI Irtaza Shah, gunman of DPO Hyderabad Muhammad Ismail and constable Hakim Jatoi received bullet injuries while SPO City Ahmed Muhammad Qureshi, SHO Tariq Khanzada and constable Anwar Ali were wounded by stones and other sharp objects hurled at them,” he informed.Ambulances kept moving inside and out of the jail.The search operation is not yet concluded.
The operation was launched after the prisoners took seven personnel of the jail police hostage. The new Jail Superintendent Shabir Jan Sarhindi had taken charge a few days back.Police from five districts including Hyderabad, Mirpurkhas, Jamshoro, Tando Allahyar and Matiari was called in to assist the jail police.The spokesman informed that police had recovered two Kalashnikovs, a repeater and a pistol, and 600 mobile phones during the action in addition to the equipment used for making wine.Meanwhile, the relatives of the inmates protested outside the prison and were dispersed by police.Earlier in the morning, the episode began with protests by the prisoners who mounted themselves on the rooftops of their barracks and complained about blockage of water, gas and electricity supply to their barracks – APP
