SC directives on damages to embankments be implemented

KARACHI: Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah has directed that the orders of Supreme Court (SC) of Pakistan regarding enquiry report of damages and losses to flood protective dykes be implemented in letter and spirit.He was presiding over a meeting of finance, irrigation, and planning and development departments at his office here on Tuesday. The meeting reviewed the progress on repair works of various flood protective bunds, which were damaged during the last year’s floods.Shah took serious notice of the attitude of beldars and daroghas and directed those reluctant to perform duties be removed immediately.

He said as already decided, all encroachments from River Indus are to be removed as such he directed the administration to take appropriate measures for the removal of encroachments and shifting of people to safer places.He also directed the authorities and officers of the irrigation department and administration to ensure completion of all repair works of flood protective bunds before June 30, 2011 in all respects.The meeting was informed that there is $400 million Chinese low mark up credit for canal lining. It was observed that the lining of canal is essential while 109-channels and lining of such small canals are to be completed. It was also observed that the cattle should not be allowed to go into canals and canal paths should be protected.

It was also observed that pacca-metalled canal paths should not be constructed on canal paths of flood-protected bunds, so as to properly maintain and protect the bunds. Sindh Secretary Irrigation informed the meeting that emergency is being declared in Irrigation department from tomorrow and the recently engaged six retired engineers with high reputation will train the darogha’s and beldars about breaches, leakages water damages with protective measures.

Sindh chief minister also observed that terms of loan are to be discussed, while feasibility report will be prepared about the proposed project.Shah also formed a two–member committee comprising of provincial ministers Syed Murad Ali Shah and Jam Saifullah Dharejo to submit a detailed report in this regard.Finance Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, Irrigation Minister Jam Saifullah Dharejo, Sindh Information Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon, Sindh Chief Secretary Abdul Subhan Memon, Sindh Secretary Finance Naveed Kamran Baloch, Secretary Irrigation Khalid Haider Memon, Secretary to CM Sindh Alamuddin Bullo and officers of the Planning and Development Department highlighted detailed views of various issues. – Dailytimes
