PESHAWAR (December 06, 2010) : Khyber-Pakthunkhwa Chief Minister, Ameer Haider Khan Hoti on Sunday said government has introduced reforms for the uplift of agriculture sector, and completion of the gigantic Bezai Irrigation Scheme would help bring green revolution in the province.

To bolster the agriculture sector of KP, the CM said, Bezai Irrigation Scheme is a step forward and would help attain self-sufficiency in food and vegetables as it would irrigate 25,000 acre arid and semi arid lands in Malakand and Mardan.

He expressed these views during the inspection of construction work of the scheme at Qasimi in Mardan district, on Sunday.

Hoti said the government is utilising all available resources for uplifting the agriculture sector as it has direct influence on country’s economy and peoples’ food. He directed the authorities concerned to complete the project at the earliest without compromising on quality and standard. He added that lack of resources would not be allowed and the scheme, in view of its vital importance, would be completed at all costs.

He further said that federal government will financially assist in completion of the mega project. The government, he added, is working on a broad-based strategy to improve the socio-economic condition of downtrodden and poor people. Special focus would be given on the cleanliness of irrigation canals so that tail-end farmers get water easily, he maintained.

The chief minister said floods severely hit farmers and growers and the government has distributed seeds and fertilisers to help them stand on their own feet and bring maximum areas under wheat and vegetative cover.

On the occasion, the chief minister approved construction of a primary school and assured provision of gas facility. The elite of the area lauded keen interest by the CM in the mega scheme and expressed hope that it would be completed ahead of schedule.

Earlier, Sajjad Khan, Project Director Bezai Irrigation Scheme said the multi-faceted project would be completed in year 2013 with an estimated cost of rupees3.24billion, would irrigate 25,000 arid land of Malakand and Mardan – Brecorder
